Program Description:
The Professional Public Health Tours (PPHT) is a dynamic two-week program designed for public health professionals, including doctors, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, mental health therapists, and other providers. This immersive experience consists of one week of impactful community service followed by one week of natural and cultural tourism, offering a unique opportunity to contribute to community well-being while exploring Tanzania’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

Located in Sub-Saharan Africa, Tanzania faces significant public health challenges that demand global attention and intervention as do most of the countries in this region. On the other hand, this country uniquely stands out as the world-favored top vacation destinations, captivating visitors with its breathtaking landscapes, iconic wildlife, and vibrant cultural heritage. In essence, PPHT bridges public health and tourism for a better Tanzania as it strives to meet the following objectives.
Objectives:
- Service Contribution: Engage in meaningful health-related projects, such as hospitals, medical clinics, community health education, and wellness initiatives, addressing critical health needs in Tanzanian communities.
- Professional Development: Visiting professionals will work side‑by‑side with local providers, enhancing local capabilities through the exchange of skills, knowledge, and practical experience across diverse healthcare settings. This collaborative model supports shared learning, strengthens service delivery, and deepens understanding of global and community‑level public health challenges. CEUs will be earned through PPHT partners.

- Tourist Week: Features guided tours of key landmarks, wildlife safaris, cultural experiences, and leisure activities. Participants will explore Tanzania’s diverse landscapes, rich history, and vibrant cultures.

Itinerary
PPHT programs can be scheduled at any time of the year and are available to both individual professionals and organized teams. Each program runs for two weeks, with Day 1 designated as the arrival day, consistent with the outlined itinerary. Each program spans two weeks, combining one week of dedicated public health service followed by one week of immersive tourism and exploration.
Suggested Itinerary:
Week 1: Public Health Service
- Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania and orientation. Airport (DAR).
- Note: Optional own international travel and own travel insurance
- Day 2: Rest, Dar es Salaam Sites, Planning & Sunset Dinner.
- Day 3: Public Hospital. Rotations in various departments/specialty-based.
- Day 4: Public Hospital. Rotations in various departments/specialty-based.
- Day 5: Community and Primary Care: Children.
- Day 6: Community and Primary Care: HIV/AIDS Patients.
- Note: Reflective Dinner: Lessons Learned and Capacity Building.
- Day 7: Rest & Personal Day: Mbudya Island Suggested.
Week 2: Tourism & Exploration
- Day 8: Transfer to Kilimanjaro/Arusha @ the foothills of the Kilimanjaro Mt.
- Arusha Market Visit
- Village Life Experience
- Day 9: Wildlife Safari Day: Tarangire National Park.
- Day 10: Rest in the Morning. Transfer to Zanzibar in the PM.
- Day 11: Spice Tour & Lunch – Transfer to Nungwi Beach.
- Day 12: Ocean Safari AM & Beach Day in the PM.
- Day 13: Stone Town Walking Tour, Shopping & Ferry to Dar es Salaam.
- Day 14: Free Day/Personal Day #2 in Dar. Farewell dinner with program officials.
- Day 15: Return Departure.
